Dog Anal Gland Expression

Dogs have two small pouches on either side of their anus, which make a fluid that dogs use to identify each other and mark their territory. If these glands do not have a chance to empty, they can become impacted, causing discomfort in your pet.

Should I drain my dog’s anal glands at home?

It is best to bring them to the clinic. Our team know how to express the anal glands to eliminate discomfort in your pet and reduce the risk of rupturing.

If my dog scoots on the carpet, does this mean their anal glands are impacted?

Although scooting doesn’t necessarily mean their glands are impacted, it may. We recommend bringing your dog in for an exam to access their comfort and the health of their anal glands.
